Hi Keith,

Yes, one very probable site in Surrey & known disused embankments in Dorset. I'm sure that there must be currently used embankments in Dorset too, but not my home turf :P.

The widespread species are found on railway embankments at several locations in south wales Keith.   One in particular that is close to where I am is now disused and supports considerable numbers of Zv and Af.

There are a number of good sites on both used and disused railways. Burley NF comes to mind, also the Swange/Wareham line which is partly opened. Also have surveyed the main line Wareham/Poole, good site. I think the latter has also been surveyed more recently.

One of the surprising spots for LA in Southport is on the side of a railway line .They can been seen from the side of the road that runs parallel with the railway line. The habitat at best can only be described as poor to average  ,the width of the bank only being about 8 feet deep with very few areas of open sand but you do get good numbers of animal  there.

Hi all,
I work on the railway, but time I get walking trackside is somewhat limited and is usually when there's engineering works.    The only native reptile I've yet to see on the railway is Ca but I can think of several places where they are likely to occur.

As for the question of La on railway embankments/property, the first La I saw of 2008 was on a railway bank, on the 4th of March between Wareham and Wool. Link below: http://herpetofauna.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2405& ;;PN=2

The depot I'm based at has a fairly decent population of Af and Zv, occasional sighting of Nn.  As for Vb, the visual searches I have undertaken to date have so far drawn a blank.   Anyway I'm waffling off topic!

As you can tell from the date of the topic, I haven't been logged in for quite a while!

Peter,
Sorry about the delay in reply, in the immediate area where i found the Sandie, there were no visible bare patches of sand(from what I can remember).   There is a heap of sand but that was at least 400 yards away.
